The Stage is Yours is a Virtual Reality sandbox game designed for players to create mini skits using props and interact with a fake audience. The play begins on the stage, inside a theatre map, where they can then move towards the toy box and begin using props. The audience are cardboard cutouts with randomised textures to give the player the sense of having a different audience each time. If and when the player has caused havoc and exhausted all of the props in the box, they can simply reset both the prop and the audience back to how they started. This project was developed as part of my third-year module, DES310, where I collaborated with a team of eight students from diverse courses.
The application was developed using the Unreal Engine, version 5.2. Coupled with the Meta Quest 2 Virtual Reality headset.
The areas I worked on include:
The toy box & respawning mechanics - The place from which all props spawn from and are subsequently respawned to.
The audience - Cardboard cutout models with random textures and a variety of custom interactions with different props.
All prop functionality - Extensive list of custom props, each with their own functionality, interactions and noises.
The Toy box was a large part of the game and incorporated multiple mechanics to achieve the design specification. It holds all the props that are included in the game and spawns another when a player removes a prop from the box, up to the set spawn limit for that specific prop. There is additional functionality to disable all interactions while props are within the toybox, otherwise it would be making constant noise
